Arthur S. Mole (born 1889 in England - died 1983 in the United States) was an English commercial artist who became famous for a series of "living photographs" made during World War I, in which tens of thousands of soldiers, reservists and other members of the military were arranged to form massive compositions. Although if viewed from the ground or from directly above, these masses of men would appear meaningless, when seen from the top of an 80-foot viewing tower, they clearly appeared to be various patriotic shapes. The key was to photograph the people from the one place where the lines of perspective would resolve themselves into intelligible images.

The paintings, sculptures, and balloons of Takashi Murakami are colorful and attractive, and accessible in their reference to lovable cartoon characters. Murakami uses his deep understanding of Western art to integrate his work into its structure; working from the inside to portray “Japanese-ness” as a tool to bring about revolution in the world of art.

As an artist, Murakami questions the lines drawn between East and West, past and present, high art and popular culture. Not stopping with the production of artworks, Murakami shocked the world with his entrepreneurial collaboration with Louis Vuitton, when he challenged the divide between art and commerce.

As a curator, Murakami challenges our notions of history and culture. With his three-part Superflat exhibition which toured in major museums in America and Europe, he attempted to introduce Japanese artists, animators, cartoonists, etc. to an international audience, under the premise that such categories of creativity are not as rigid in the Japanese system, and might all be thought of as “art.” His final installation Little Boy suggested a new interpretation of history through a political exposition of the A-bomb and post-war Japanese popular culture.

While proposing a rethinking of “Japan” to those both within and outside, Murakami maintains a strong commitment to promoting Japanese art throughout the world. Twice a year he holds the GEISAI festival in Japan for young emerging talent, and with his company Kaikai Kiki, supports and manages a group of young artists while preparing for his future endeavors.

The new façade aims to become a virtual space for exchange and communication with both visitors and locals. It is an infrastructure designed as an active support capable of promoting social responsibility, information transmission, social interaction and play-oriented experiences.

Mexico has announced plans to build the largest underwater museum in the world, with around 400 figures made of concrete submerged in the Caribbean sea, near Cancun. The goal? Protecting the regions coral reefs.

The Sculpture Underwater Museum will be located at the Parque Nacional Costa Occidental, which is located around Mujeres Island, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc. This area receives around 290 thousand tourists a year, which bring lots of economic wealth but add a lot of pressure to the region’s natural resources.

According to the designer, Jason de Caires Taylor, the idea is to drive tourist attention from the Mexican Caribbean sea’s coral reefs onto the newly created museum….

Timothy Saccenti is a photographer, director and Artist living in New York city and working worldwide. His visuals evoke tension by striking a balance between the otherworldly and the familiar while mixing in a dose of humor. Using a palette of exquisite art direction, unique use of color, and palatial lighting, he paints his subjects as archetypes in their own worlds, in a style described recently as “baroque futurism, with a precise-horror attitude”.

Timothy has become a visual voice for a generation of musical artists by creating photography and promos for Battles, Animal Collective, Jamie Lidell, Flying lotus, The School of Seven Bells, Chairlift, and Big Pink amongst others. These have earned him accolades from coveted UK quarterly Specialten, Fader, Creative Review, Videostatic, and Pitchfork Media, as well as entry into multiple festivals. In 2008 his video for Battles “Atlas” won the Plug award for music video of the yeah, was named new director of the year by Antville and Boards magazine featured him as a “director to watch”. In addition to his music promos Timothy has created commercials for clients that include Audi, Nike, and Nikon and Sony.Timothy's first solo art show “The Garden of Unearthly Delights” has taken place at the Diesel Gallery in Tokyo in 2009, about which the Japan times has said Timothy “charts a classic quest for life's meaning within a sci-fi context.”-Japan Times

Photographer Francis Wolff

Francis Wolff was a professional photographer in Berlin when in 1939 he caught the last ship from Germany to America. He joined his boyhood friend, Alfred Lion, and together they built Blue Note Records into one of the great labels in jazz history. Wolff photographed almost every Blue Note Session from 1939 to 1967. He died in 1971 after having shot thousands of images, many of which have been established as classics. Francis Wolff never thought of his work as important or immortal, but merely as a resource for Blue Note to utilize for cover art. He is now widely recognized as one of the few great artists of jazz photography.

The Cove

The Cove is a 2009 documentary film of the purported annual killing of about 2,300 dolphins in a National Park at Taiji, Wakayama, in Japan. The film highlights that this is about three times the amount of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed in Japan every year. It was directed by former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, and portions were filmed secretly during 2007 using underwater microphones and high-definition cameras disguised as rocks. The film won the U.S. Audience Award at the 25th annual Sundance Film Festival in January 2009. It was selected out of the 879 submissions in the category.

Soundsuits by Nick Cave (not the down-under singer!)

Nick Cave (Chicago) began his career as a performer and fashion designer, creating fantastic, almost ritualistic costumes for dance and performances. More recently, he has been presenting these costumes as sculptural objects. These works, which he calls Soundsuits, are textured, sensual, elaborately designed assemblages of sometimes unexpected materials that act almost like musical instruments, emitting sound as they move. He has produced 40 of these pieces, which he describes as “full body suits constructed of materials that rattle with movement . . . like a coat of armor, [they] embellish the body while protecting the wearer from outside culture.” Cave has received the Joyce Award (2006), the Richard Dreihaus Foundation Individual Artist Award (2006), Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (2001), and several grants from Creative Capital. He is a professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Katinka Versendaal uses a 180-degree pop-up technique to create a series of tableware that folds away when not in use.

A table lamp, two candlestick holders and a fruit bowl that pop up into action when needed are inspired by Escher, an artist who was a master of distorting and transforming reality.

When not needed, the pieces fold flat into plain white rectangles. Then, when needed, voila: You’ve got all the necessary pieces for entertaining.

Installation artist Mark Jenkins has populated cityscapes with his sculptures, from his native Washington, D.C., to Brazil and the UK with his brand of “off-the-wall” graffiti. Jenkins uses ordinary clear packing tape to create his sculptures, a cast-based process he first discovered in the second grade. One of his installations was to stick his tape-based hyper-realistic fake people into city walls and trash receptacles.

A collection agent meets his match in The Phantom Inventory, a stop-motion armature short from the aptly named Les Armateurs studio under the direction of Franck Dion. In this supernatural chiller akin to Wilde’s Portrait of Dorian Gray, the display of unchained imagination is complemented by the filmmakers’ own liberation in their mixing of analogue and digital techniques.

The story concerns a bailiff from the Debt Collection Ministry and an afternoon appointment that doesn’t go as planned. The setting, though unspecified, is probably Paris in the 1920s. The debt collector takes a long elevator ride to reach his quarry, a wizened, wheelchair-bound apartment dweller named Albert from whom there is nothing, at first glance, to collect. The gaunt, tall, crimson-suited bureaucrat asks the man exactly what he collects. “Memories, sir,” Albert replies, “memories that no one wants anymore.” A quick tour through empty rooms leads to the discovery of a secret door, opening on a grand hall of tall ornamental shelves stuffed silly with other people’s tchotchkes...

The company’s first collection is a range of unisex wrist watches with a minimal, contemporary aesthetic, available in four monochromatic tones, black /white / portland / taupe, and four warm colours, mustard / Swiss red / engineering red / morel.

The collection has been produced in a limited quantity, each watch having a unique batch number. They will be sold through the company’s website from 1st December as well as select independent stores, with prices from £85.00

The inspiration for the watches is derived from the form and graphic detailing of wall clocks from British industry. Detailing includes hard anodised aluminium case, precision Japanese quartz movement, +/- 15 sec per month accuracy, crystal face, urethane strap, 4 year battery life and 1 year manufacturers warranty.

Nestled in the heart of one of the oldest Spanish Wineries, and designed by worldwide renowned architect Frank O. Gehry, Marqués De Riscal is a Luxury Collection Hotel. This hotel is Frank O. Gehry’s second masterpiece in Spain after driving Bilbao's urban revival with the Guggenheim Museum. Located in the heart of the Rioja wine region, this is the perfect place for relaxing.

The main building of the hotel houses the reception, bar, restaurant and a magnificent penthouse lounge, with balconies perched between the titanium roof.

The bedrooms aren’t in the main scrunched-up metal ball, but in a more conventional block across a bridge. The rooms have high ceilings and large beds with masses of soft white downy layers. There are enormous windows, wooden floors and simple splashes of color, such as one strategically placed red leather chair.

The marble bathrooms are like cathedrals, the washbasins like altars of metal, glass and mirrors. There are separate showers and bathtubs, loos and huge closets with gliding doors. Though grand, somehow the design doesn’t feel as if it is trying very hard.
